Best Natural Flea prevention
Have you been wondering what is the best natural Flea prevention?
Anyone who has been through a dose of Flea’s know’s that the little buggers can be hard to get rid of once they have settled.
Not only do they invade your Fur babies but also your carpets, beds and blankets and they can become quite the little pest.
So what is the best natural Flea prevention?
Well for starters, as we all know, prevention is often better than cure. So the first thing we should all focus on is preventing them from finding a home in the first place.
Try these strategies for your best natural Flea prevention
1- Keep them away from your backyard.
1.1- Add Nematodes. Nematodes are tiny little worm-like creatures that are found in soils. They are effective at controlling garden pests like ants, termites and also flea’s. You can find these online or from your local gardening store and simply spray them on your garden/yard in Spring to early Summer.
1.2- Lawn Mowing. Keeping your grass short can help prevent anything from hiding amongst it.
1.3- Plant defence. Keeping natural Bug repelling plants like Sage, Lemongrass, Lemon Balm, Basil, Catnip and Mint nearby can be an effective strategy.
1.4- D.E (Diatomaceous Earth). DE is a white powder derived generally from ground shellfish that is microscopically razor sharp and can literally cut Flea’s and other micro organisms preventing outbreaks. DE is regarded as GRAS (generally regarded as safe) however, If using DE be sure to only purchase Food Grade and use personal protective masks if spreading around.
2- Inside your Home
2.1- Carpet. Like long grass outside carpets can hide little critters giving them a place to call home. If you have the option of removing carpets you may like to consider. However if that is not an option then you really need to go above keeping your carpets clean with vaccuming regularly and steam cleaning at least once or twice per year. You may also like to spread out some DE and vaccum after 48hrs.
3- Nutrition (Always consult with your Veterinarian first)
3.1- Garlic. This can be a controversial subject so always consult with your veterinarian first but feeding your dog small amounts of garlic can be a best natural flea prevention strategy.
3.2- ACV (Apple Cider Vinegar) Raw Unfiltered ACV added to your dogs meals can be a huge deterrent to fleas. generally 1/2tsp per day for a 10kg dog.
3.3- EO (Essential Oils). Please do not use EO undiluted on your Pets. They must be watered down with a carrier oil and even then can be too strong. You may like to consider a bandanna tied around your dogs neck with some diluted EO on it (exactly like a Flea collar) using oils like Lavender, Lemon, Cedar, Eucalyptus, Clary Sage and Peppermint. Remove this Bandanna when your pet comes back inside.
3.4 Biological Health. The biological health of your pet is paramount to best flea prevention. Flea’s will generally seek out easy prey like sick animals. So a health pet is your best defence.
Have you noticed your pet is not quite as playful as they used to be, are they getting up and down a little slower than you remember, are they spending more and more time just laying around?
These symptoms can be a sign of neuromuscular trauma/injury and we can generally treat this with hands on bodywork.
